Marriage and Space
I have been asked if (besides me) there a connection between The Wedding Guide and an interest in Astronomy?
Quite simply – YES!
The wonders of astronomy can provide a great backdrop to romance; sharing a sunset, taking a stroll in the moonlight or just enjoying a look up at a star filled sky. We can all appreciate these wonders but if we look further there are a great many links between love and the stars.
Many of the legends behind the names of the constellations have their roots in love stories. In Greek mythology, Perseus married the princess Andromeda after he saved her from being sacrificed to a sea monster. The constellations of Perseus and Andromeda can be seen close together in the sky.
According to ancient myth, when princess Ariadne of Crete married the god Bacchus she wore a crown which bacchus through up into the air. The jewels on the crown then turned into stars which form the constellation Corona Borealis.
Closer to the Earth we have Venus, named after the roman goddess of love and beauty. As the nearest planet to us and therefore one of the brightest objects in the night sky it is indeed a beautiful sight from Earth although the runaway greenhouse effect, extreme temperature and thick cloud probably make it less appealing close up.
A couple of extra facts from human spaceflight.
There have been several astronaut couples in the shuttle program and one of these couples actually served together on one of the shuttle missions (although they weren’t married at the time they were assigned the mission – NASA has a policy against married couples being on the same flight).
The first person to get married in space was a Russian cosmonaut.
Yuri Malenchenko, who was on the International Space Station, married Ekaterina Dmitriev (in Houston) using a video link. This was permitted under Texas law.
